The Krypt makes a return in the game, where players can use "koins" to unlock alternate costumes, arenas, concept art, music, and other promotional material. The main protagonist is Taven, a half-god warrior sent along with his brother (and antagonist) Daegon to defeat Blaze and save the realms from armageddon. The story takes place in a cataclysmic event in an enormous crater on Edenia, where every warrior in the Mortal Kombat universe clashes in an epic battle royale for the opportunity to defeat Blaze, a giant fire elemental created by the Elder Gods as a final defense against the growing power of the warriors. New gameplay mechanics include mid-air combos and a different form of Fatalities (where instead of a single character-specific sequence, players instead chain together a brutal series of attacks and dismemberments). It features every fighter from the fighting games to date (with 62 playable characters), along with a new brawler-based Konquest Mode (with gameplay similar to Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks), a kart racer mini-game, and the ability to create custom fighters. It is the seventh main installment of the Mortal Kombat franchise (and the final game in the original canon timeline).
